Goliad: Historic Zaragoza sites in need of repair, maintenance

General Ignacio  Zaragoza led Mexican troops to victory in the Battle of Puebla, commonly referred to as Cinco de Mayo.

However, rebar now shows between the concrete benches surrounding his statute, and there has been some vandalism in the past. There are also maintenance issues at a nearby amphitheater that connects to a remake of the adobe that Zaragoza was born in.

Above: Vandals likely broke off  this concrete block that is part of the General Ignacio Zaragoza monument, said Beth Ellis, ranger and tour guide head for Goliad State Park & Historic Site.  This damage occurred a while ago, Ellis said.

Above: This trail leads from the remake of the adobe to the amphitheater. However, a large part of the trail is covered with overgrowth. The Zaragoza statue is a about 20 yards further up from the amphitheater. 


To the left: This monument, with the American and Mexican flags, as well a symbol similar to the eagle featured on the Mexican flag, is covered with what Beth Ellis called patina. A professional must be hired to clean that off in order to not damage the monument itself.
